Product Category Information
Single pole panel connectors are the fixed half of a temporary power system. They bolt into the enclosure of a distribution board, generator, load bank or power trailer and give the matching line connectors a solid, colour-coded point to plug into. A complete feed uses one panel connector per conductor, so you build the set from individual panel source (outlet) and panel drain (inlet) connectors rather than a single multi-pin socket.
Panel source connectors are used where power leaves the equipment, such as a generator output or distribution board feeder, and have recessed contacts so live parts stay covered. Panel drain connectors are used where power comes in, such as the supply inlet on a board or load bank. Rear terminations suit busbar or cable connection inside the enclosure, and the keyed, colour-coded housings stop the wrong conductors being mated. These connectors are a staple for event and staging power, film and television production, construction, mining and generator hire fleets across Australia.
Our electricians fit panel connectors into distribution boards and generator sets regularly, so we can help you choose the right source or drain, colour and termination for your enclosure. Combine them with our line connectors, accessories and flexible cable per metre for a complete, compliant temporary power distribution setup.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a single pole panel connector?
A single pole panel connector is a connector for one conductor that mounts permanently into the wall of an enclosure such as a distribution board, generator or load bank. The matching line connector on a flexible lead plugs into it. A three-phase supply uses a separate colour-coded panel connector for each phase, the neutral and the earth.
What is the difference between a panel source and a panel drain?
A panel source is an outlet: power leaves the equipment through it, and its contacts are recessed so live parts are not exposed. A panel drain is an inlet: power enters the equipment through it. A line drain plugs into a panel source, and a line source plugs into a panel drain.
How are panel connectors terminated inside the enclosure?
Panel connectors are terminated at the rear, inside the enclosure, typically to a busbar, a lug or a cable tail depending on the connector type. The termination method and conductor size must suit the connector, and the work must be done by a licensed electrician.
Are Powersafe and Powerlock panel connectors interchangeable?
Powersafe and Powerlock are different connector systems from different manufacturers. Only mate line connectors with panel connectors that the manufacturer specifies as compatible, and always match the colour and connector system before plugging in.
Why are panel connectors colour coded and keyed?
Each conductor (phases, neutral and earth) is given a colour, and the connector housing is mechanically keyed to that colour so a line connector of a different colour cannot be plugged in. This stops phases being cross-connected or a live conductor being put onto the earth.
Who can install panel connectors in a distribution board or generator in Australia?
Fitting and terminating panel connectors is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. The completed board or generator connection should be tested before use, and temporary power installations must comply with the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.
