How the reduction works
Powersafe set screw contacts take 120mm² cable as standard. Phase 3's reduction sleeves narrow that contact's rear cable bucket, and its assembly guide lists sleeves for 95, 70, 50, 35 and 25mm² cable. The R35 is the 35mm² size.
Phase 3's own example
The assembly guide uses 35mm² cable to illustrate its rule that every sleeve down to the recommended size must be used: for a 35mm² cable, it says, the R120, R95, R70, R50 and R35 sleeves should all be used in sequence. Because the sleeves fit inside each other, together they form a gradual reduction span. The flared end of each sleeve faces the cable insulation. Have all five sizes ready before preparing the cable.
Steps at the contact
- Take the cable jacket back by 33mm
- Slide each sleeve onto the conductor stranding in sequence
- Seat the cable and sleeves fully inside the contact
- Tighten with a 5mm Allen bit; 10.5 Nm is the minimum
Quality of the joint
Phase 3 describes the recommended assembly procedure as essential to a satisfactory set screw termination. Copper is the only conductor material for the line connectors. The connectors should be installed, inspected and maintained by qualified electricians, and every step should meet local and national electrical codes. For a full set of sizes, Phase 3's Set Screw Reduction Kit packs the R95, R70, R50, R35 and R25 sleeves with M40S and M40SS bushes.
