Stepping a 120mm² Contact Down to 50mm²
Purpose of the sleeves
Set screw connectors in the Powersafe range are built for 120mm² cable. Reduction sleeves narrow the cable bucket in the back of the set screw contact, and Phase 3's assembly guide uses them for cables from 95mm² to 25mm². The R50 is the sleeve matched to 50mm². For a complete range, Phase 3 also offers a full Set Screw Reduction Kit holding five sleeves, R95 down to R25, plus M40S and M40SS bushes.
Four sleeves for 50mm²
Every sleeve down to the recommended size has to be used, according to the guide. At 50mm² that means R120, R95, R70 and R50, one inside the next, so the reduction steps down gradually rather than in one jump. Each sleeve goes on with its flared end toward the cable insulation. Make sure all four sizes are available before stripping the cable. The guide gives the same 33mm strip length and 10.5 Nm minimum torque for every cable size from 25mm² to 95mm².
Termination sequence
- Remove 33mm of cable jacket
- Thread the sleeves on over the strands in the guide's sequence
- Insert cable and sleeves fully into the contact
- Torque the set screws, 5mm Allen bit, 10.5 Nm minimum
Doing it properly
A satisfactory set screw termination, Phase 3 says, depends on using the recommended assembly procedure. Only copper conductors are to be used with the line connectors. Qualified electricians should carry out the installation and the later inspection and maintenance, with local and national electrical code requirements met.
