Fitting 70mm² Cable to a Set Screw Contact

What reduction sleeves do
Powersafe set screw connectors are a 120mm² series, and Phase 3's reduction sleeves reduce the cable bucket at the rear of the set screw contact so smaller cable can be terminated. Phase 3's assembly guide covers cable from 95mm² down to 25mm² this way. Each sleeve size matches a cable size, and the R70 is the 70mm² sleeve.

The full sequence matters
The guide is explicit that all sleeves down to the size recommended for the cable must be used. For a 70mm² cable its table lists R120, R95 and R70. The sleeves fit perfectly inside each other to create a gradual reduction span, and the flared end of each sleeve sits against the cable insulation. Check that the larger sleeves are on hand before starting.

Assembly steps from the guide

  • Strip the cable jacket to 33mm
  • Slide the sleeves on in sequence over the conductor strands
  • Push cable and sleeves fully into the back of the contact
  • Do up the set screws using a 5mm Allen bit to at least 10.5 Nm

Getting a sound termination
Phase 3 states that following the recommended assembly procedure is essential for a satisfactory set screw termination. The line connectors are for copper conductors only, and Phase 3 requires the work, from installation through inspection to maintenance, to be done by qualified electricians to the local and national electrical codes that govern it.
