Description

Type A residual current and overload protection.

A Type AC device will not reliably detect pulsating DC residual current, and modern loads produce plenty of it. The Tesla RCDM1106A is a single pole RCBO rated at 10 amps, with Type A RCD protection class, 30 mA earth leakage detection and a 6 kA breaking capacity.

  • Breaking capacity: 6kA
  • Tripping curve: C
  • Rated voltage: 240V
  • Rated frequency: 50/60Hz
  • Residual current and overcurrent protection in one device
  • Built in filtering device against unwanted transient voltages and currents
  • Electromechanical endurance: 4000

What Type A Protection Covers

Residual current devices are graded by the waveform of leakage they can detect. A Type AC device responds only to smooth sinusoidal AC residual current. A Type A device responds to that as well as pulsating DC residual current, the kind produced downstream of rectifiers and switch mode power supplies.

The RCDM1106A carries the Type A class, so it stays effective on circuits feeding rectified and switched loads rather than purely resistive ones. Earth leakage detection is rated at 30 mA, and that function sits in the same device as the overcurrent protection.

Two Protective Functions in One Device

An RCBO combines a residual current device and a miniature circuit breaker in a single unit. The residual current element watches for leakage to earth. The overcurrent element covers overload and short circuit on the same circuit.

Because both functions sit on one circuit rather than being shared, a fault takes out only that circuit. That is the practical difference from a single upstream RCD protecting a group of final subcircuits, where one earth fault can disconnect several circuits at once.

The overcurrent side uses a C curve characteristic, and the device is rated at a 6 kA breaking capacity. That figure is the fault current the unit can interrupt, so it must suit the prospective fault level at the board.

Filtering, Endurance and the Wider Range

Tesla builds a filtering device into this RCBO to prevent the risks of unwanted transient voltage and transient currents. Transients are a common source of tripping unrelated to a real earth fault, and a filtered device is less prone to it.

Electromechanical endurance is rated at 4000. The unit complies with IEC 61009, the standard covering residual current operated circuit breakers with integral overcurrent protection, and Tesla backs it with a 10 year warranty.

The single pole 6 kA Type A range runs at 10, 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 amps, so a board can be fitted out from one family at one breaking capacity and one protection class. Rated voltage is 240V at 50/60Hz across the range. Each unit is supplied individually.

What is the difference between a Type A and a Type AC RCBO?
A Type AC device detects only sinusoidal AC residual current. The Tesla RCDM1106A is Type A, so it also detects pulsating DC residual current from loads such as rectifiers and switch mode power supplies.

What is the earth leakage rating of the Tesla RCDM1106A?
Earth leakage detection is rated at 30 mA. The same device also provides overcurrent protection on that circuit, using a C curve characteristic and a 6 kA breaking capacity.

What standard does the Tesla RCDM1106A comply with?
It complies with IEC 61009, the standard for residual current operated circuit breakers with integral overcurrent protection. Tesla backs the device with a 10 year warranty.
