Why it Matters

Three Poles, One Movement
On a three phase board the value of a three pole device is that every phase leaves together. A single lever throw removes all three, so there is no partial isolation and no sequence to remember. That behaviour is what IEC 60947-3 governs: switching and isolation, with no overload element and no short circuit trip inside the device. Fault current on the circuits below remains the job of whatever protective devices sit downstream, and the main switch simply sits ahead of them all. Checking which standard a device carries before it goes into a board is the quickest way to avoid specifying the wrong one.

Reading the 10kA Iq Figure
Tesla publishes a conditioned rated short-circuit current, Iq, of 10kA. The word conditioned carries weight. It describes what the switch will withstand while a suitable upstream device clears the fault on its behalf, rather than a current the switch interrupts by itself. The practical consequence is that the rating only holds if that upstream protection is actually present and correctly rated, so confirming it belongs in the specification stage rather than on site. Comparing this number against a breaking capacity printed on a protective device is not a like for like comparison.

Terminals, Lever and Board Space
Connection is by tunnel terminal at both ends, so incoming and outgoing conductors land the same way and the switch can be fed from either direction. Terminals are insulated and rated IP20, and the front face carries IP20 as well, which suits an enclosed board where hands and tools come close to live parts during work. Operation is manual by red lever, and the colour with the large toggle exists so that somebody unfamiliar with the board can find the isolation point immediately when power has to go off in a hurry. The three pole body occupies 54mm of modular spacing, three standard 18mm positions, keeping board layout predictable. Tesla positions the TMS range across residential, commercial and industrial applications, with TMS1P63 and TMS1P100 covering single pole duties alongside this device. Three pole units are supplied in boxes of 4.

Does the Tesla TMS3P100 protect against overload?
No. This device switches and isolates under IEC 60947-3; it holds no overload element and no short circuit trip. Fault protection stays with the devices feeding each outgoing circuit.

What does the 10kA rating on the TMS3P100 mean?
It is a conditioned rated short-circuit current (Iq). The switch withstands 10kA when backed by suitable upstream protection, and it does not interrupt that current on its own.

How much board space does the three pole main switch take?
Modular spacing is 54mm, which is three standard 18mm positions. The single pole TMS1P100 in the same range is 18mm.
