Description

Twenty amps, RCD and MCB combined. Hot water, air con, high-draw circuits.

The Tesla RCBO6K20 is a Single Pole 20A 6kA 30mA Type A RCBO built to AS/NZS 61009.1. It combines residual current (earth leakage) and overcurrent (circuit breaker) protection in a single 1P+N DIN rail device — the standard choice for electric hot water systems, split system air conditioners, and dedicated high-draw appliance circuits requiring combined RCD and MCB protection in Australian residential and commercial switchboards.

  • 1P+N / 20A / 6kA breaking capacity
  • 30mA residual current trip — personal protection threshold
  • Type A — detects sinusoidal and pulsating DC residual currents
  • C Curve overcurrent trip — general-purpose, handles moderate inrush
  • 240V AC / 50-60Hz
  • DIN rail mount — 1 module width, 18mm, 35mm rail
  • Pillar clamp terminal — rigid conductor up to 10mm²
  • IP20 rated for enclosed switchboard installation
  • AS/NZS 61009.1 — approval number SGS-210384-EA
  • Mechanical life: 20,000 cycles | Electrical life: 10,000 cycles
  • Range: available 10A, 16A, 20A, 25A, 32A

The Standard RCBO for Hot Water and Air Conditioning Circuits

The 20A RCBO is one of the most frequently installed ratings on Australian residential jobs. Electric hot water systems and split system air conditioners are typically wired on 20A circuits, and AS/NZS 3000 requires RCD protection on these circuits — making the RCBO6K20 the natural single-device solution. Rather than combining a separate 20A MCB with a shared RCD, each dedicated circuit gets its own independent RCBO: a fault or trip on the hot water circuit doesn't kill the air conditioning circuit, and vice versa.

Type A — Essential for Inverter-Driven Equipment

Inverter-driven split system air conditioners and electronically controlled hot water systems can generate pulsating DC fault currents that a Type AC RCBO won't detect. The Type A characteristic of the RCBO6K20 detects both sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC residual currents — correctly rated for modern inverter equipment that is now standard across Australian residential and commercial installations. For circuits feeding any electronically controlled appliance, Type A is the right choice.

Termination and Installation

Clips straight onto 35mm DIN rail. The pillar clamp terminal accepts rigid conductors up to 25mm² — no ferrules required. At 18mm wide (1 module), it occupies the same space as a single MCB. IP20 is appropriate for any enclosed switchboard or distribution enclosure. Operating temperature -5°C to 55°C.

Q: Is the RCBO6K20 the correct device for a hot water system circuit?
A: Yes — 20A is the standard RCBO rating for single-phase electric storage hot water system circuits in Australian residential installations. The RCBO6K20 provides both the overcurrent protection (replacing the MCB) and the mandatory RCD earth leakage protection (replacing the shared RCD) in a single device. Always confirm the hot water unit's rated current draw and cable sizing against AS/NZS 3000.

Q: Why is Type A important for split system air conditioner circuits?
A: Modern inverter-driven split systems use variable speed drives and switch-mode electronics that can generate pulsating DC fault currents. A Type AC RCBO only detects sinusoidal fault currents and may not respond to these pulsating DC faults. Type A detects both — making the RCBO6K20 the correct and safer choice for any circuit feeding modern inverter air conditioning equipment.

Q: Is the Tesla RCBO6K20 approved for use in Australian switchboards?
A: Yes. The RCBO6K20 is built to AS/NZS 61009.1 with Australian approval number SGS-210384-EA. It is suitable for use in compliant Australian residential, commercial, and light industrial switchboard installations.
