Why the C Curve Matters at 16 Amps

The tripping curve describes how quickly the overcurrent element reacts to a surge. A C characteristic tolerates a higher momentary inrush before the magnetic trip operates than a B characteristic does, which is why it is the common selection across Australian general power and mixed load circuits. Motors, transformers, switch mode supplies and banks of LED drivers all draw a brief spike on energisation, and a device that reacts too eagerly to that spike creates nuisance trips rather than protection.

This unit is marked C16 on the body. The C refers to the curve, the 16 to the rated current, so the marking can be read off the front of the board during an inspection without pulling the schedule.

Earth Leakage and Overcurrent in One Position

An RCBO carries a residual current element and a miniature circuit breaker element in the same housing. Earth leakage is detected at a residual rated current of 30 mA. Overload and short circuit are handled up to a rated breaking capacity of 4.5 kA. Because the protection is dedicated to one circuit rather than shared across a board, a trip takes out only the affected run.

The residual element is Type A, meaning it responds to sinusoidal AC residual currents and to pulsating DC residual currents. That classification suits circuits feeding equipment with electronic front ends, which is most of what a 16 amp general power circuit serves.

Fitting It to the Board

Width is 18mm, a single module, over a standard 35mm DIN rail. An On/Off indicator shows switch state at a glance. Rated voltage is 240V AC at 50/60Hz, matching single phase supply in Australia. The device complies with AS/NZS 61009.1:2015, carries SAA approval and is listed by Tesla as ESV compliant. It ships in boxes of 10 and cartons of 100 for board build outs.

Q: What tripping curve does the Tesla RCDM116-4.5kA use?
A: It uses a C curve. The device body is marked C16, where the C is the tripping characteristic and the 16 is the rated current in amps. A C characteristic tolerates a higher momentary inrush before the magnetic element operates than a B characteristic.

Q: Does the Tesla RCDM116-4.5kA fit a standard switchboard rail?
A: Yes. It mounts to 35mm DIN rail and occupies 18mm, which is one module position, the same width as a standard single module circuit breaker.

Q: What residual current will this RCBO trip at?
A: The residual rated current is 30 mA and the sensing class is Type A, as specified on the Tesla product data sheet and marked on the device body.
