Description

Earth leakage and overcurrent in one unit.

Fitting a separate RCD and circuit breaker costs width on the board and ties several circuits to one leakage device. The Tesla RCDM1206A handles both jobs on a single 20 amp circuit, with Type A RCD protection class, 30 mA earth leakage detection and a 6 kA breaking capacity.

  • Earth leakage: 30mA
  • Breaking capacity: 6kA
  • Tripping curve: C
  • Rated voltage: 240V
  • Rated frequency: 50/60Hz
  • Residual current and overcurrent protection in one device
  • Built in filtering device against unwanted transient voltages and currents

Why the Type A Class Matters

Not every residual current device sees every kind of leakage. The protection class describes which waveforms it will act on. Type AC covers smooth sinusoidal AC leakage and nothing beyond it.

Type A widens that. It picks up sinusoidal AC leakage and pulsating DC leakage, the sort that appears once a rectifier or a switch mode supply sits on the circuit. The RCDM1206A is rated Type A, and its earth leakage threshold is 30 mA.

The class is a property of the device, not a setting, so there is nothing to configure on installation.

What the 20 Amp Rating Buys You

The overcurrent half of this device is a miniature circuit breaker with a C curve characteristic, rated at 20 amps. It watches for overload and short circuit on that circuit, while the residual current half watches for leakage to earth.

Keeping both on one circuit is the point. Where a single RCD sits upstream of a group of final subcircuits, one earth fault drops all of them. A dedicated RCBO per circuit confines the trip to the circuit that actually faulted, which shortens fault finding considerably.

Breaking capacity is 6 kA. That is the fault current the device is built to interrupt, so it has to match the prospective fault level at the board it goes into. Where that level is higher, a device with a larger figure is required.

Filtering, Service Life and Range

Tesla fits a filtering device inside this RCBO to prevent the risks of unwanted transient voltage and transient currents. Nuisance trips caused by transients rather than genuine leakage are a well known frustration, and filtering reduces the exposure.

Electromechanical endurance is rated at 4000. The unit meets IEC 61009, the standard for residual current operated circuit breakers with integral overcurrent protection, and carries a 10 year warranty.

The single pole 6 kA Type A family spans 10, 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 amps at 240V and 50/60Hz, so a whole board can be built from one range at a consistent protection class rather than mixing devices with different leakage behaviour. Each unit is supplied on its own.

Does the Tesla RCDM1206A replace both an RCD and a circuit breaker?
Yes. It is an RCBO, meaning residual current detection and overcurrent protection sit in one device. It provides 30 mA earth leakage protection and 20 amp C curve overcurrent protection on the same circuit.

What does the Type A rating on the Tesla RCDM1206A mean?
Type A means the device detects sinusoidal AC residual current and pulsating DC residual current. A Type AC device detects only the sinusoidal AC kind.

What is the breaking capacity of the Tesla RCDM1206A?
Breaking capacity is 6 kA. The device is rated 240V at 50/60Hz, complies with IEC 61009 and is backed by a 10 year warranty.
