Type A Sensing Across Four Poles

A four pole RCD monitors all three actives and the neutral together. Current flowing out of the circuit should equal the current returning. When it does not, the difference is leaking to earth, and the device disconnects. Type A is the classification that responds to sinusoidal AC residual currents as well as pulsating DC residual currents, as defined under AS/NZS 61008-1. The 30 mA sensitivity is the additional protection level specified for personal protection in Australian installations.

One point to be clear on before specifying: this is a residual current device, not a combination unit. It provides earth leakage protection only. Overload and short-circuit protection for the downstream circuits still has to come from separate overcurrent devices, and because the conditional rated short-circuit current is 6 kA, the RCD itself depends on a suitably rated upstream device to handle prospective fault current.

Built for Switchboard Duty

The housing is PA66 reinforced fire-resistant plastic, a material widely specified for DIN rail devices. The front face carries an IP20 rating, which suits enclosed switchboard mounting rather than exposed positions, so the device needs a board or enclosure around it rather than being fitted in the open. Rated operating temperature runs from -5 to 40 degrees C, covering the internal temperatures of a typical Australian switchboard, though boards in direct sun or in unventilated plant rooms should be assessed against that upper figure.
