Description

Sixty-three amps of earth leakage protection, two modules wide.

The Tesla RCD2P63 is a 2 pole 63 amp residual current device rated at 250V with 30mA Type A sensing. It disconnects both the active and the neutral the moment an earth leakage fault is detected, cutting the shock risk to a person before it becomes fatal.

Key Features

  • 2 Pole (double pole) - switches active and neutral together
  • 63 A rated current
  • 30 mA Type A residual current sensitivity
  • 250 V rated voltage
  • 6 kA short-circuit rating
  • 2 module width - 81 x 36 x 75 mm
  • Operating temperature -5 to 40 degrees C
  • No hot spot terminations with every cable strand locked in
  • Guided terminals - conductors self-align into the correct position behind a guard
  • Fast closure contact action
  • Supplied singly, 60 per outer carton

Earth Leakage Protection, Specified Correctly

The RCD2P63 does one job and does it fast. It monitors the imbalance between active and neutral and disconnects on earth leakage at 30mA. It is not a combined protection device, so it does not respond to overload or short circuit. Pair it with circuit breakers sized for the final subcircuits and the board has both forms of protection covered. The 6kA figure is the short-circuit level the device is rated to withstand, not a setting at which it operates. Getting that right at design stage avoids fitting an RCD and assuming the subcircuits behind it are fully protected.

Why Type A Matters

Type A is the sensing classification for residual current devices that respond to both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. Switched-mode power supplies and electronic drives can produce a pulsating DC leakage component an older AC-only device may not see. Specifying Type A at 30mA keeps the protection valid as more electronic equipment lands on the board.

Built to Fit an Australian Board

At two modules and 36 mm wide, the RCD2P63 takes the same slot allowance as a two-pole breaker, so it drops into an existing board layout without redesign. The body measures 81 x 36 x 75 mm - check that depth behind the escutcheon on older boards.

Terminations are the practical detail on a 63 amp device. The guided terminal design pulls every strand of a large conductor into the correct position behind a guard, so the conductor cannot splay or sit half-clamped as it is tightened. The no hot spot construction targets the loose-strand overheating that surfaces on high-current terminations years after installation, and fast closure completes the picture.

One caveat to specify around: the published operating range is -5 to 40 degrees C. Check the ambient inside sealed or roof-mounted enclosures, because switchboard internals in an Australian summer sit well above outside air temperature.

Q: Does the Tesla RCD2P63 provide circuit breaker protection as well?
A: No. The RCD2P63 is a residual current device only. It trips on 30mA earth leakage and does not protect against overload or short circuit, so it must be used together with circuit breakers on the subcircuits it feeds.

Q: How much switchboard space does the Tesla RCD2P63 take up?
A: Two modules. The body measures 81 x 36 x 75 mm, so it occupies the same width as a typical two-pole device on the rail.

Q: What is the difference between Type A and Type AC on this RCD?
A: Type A responds to both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. Type AC responds to sinusoidal AC only. The Tesla RCD2P63 is a Type A device at 30mA.
