An RCBO consolidates protection that would otherwise take two devices. The overcurrent element interrupts sustained overloads and short circuits. The residual current element watches the imbalance between active and neutral and disconnects on earth leakage at 30 mA, the sensitivity used for protection against direct contact by the human body. Because both functions live in one device, an earth fault drops only the affected circuit rather than everything downstream of a shared RCD.

Why the switched neutral matters

This is a 1P + N device, meaning the neutral is switched rather than solid-linked. When the RCBO opens, both conductors are broken.
