Why It Matters
One device, three protective jobs
An RCBO does the work that a circuit breaker and a residual current device would otherwise split between them. This unit covers earth fault and leakage current, short circuit and overload in the one body, and Tesla also rates it for complementary protection against direct contact by the human body.
Because protection is per circuit rather than shared, a leakage fault drops that circuit alone. A board built around shared residual current devices behaves the opposite way, taking out every circuit sitting behind the tripped device. Tesla positions this range as a safety appliance that protects personal safety, prevents electrical fires and stops connected equipment being damaged in the process.
Type A is the characteristic modern loads call for
Type A devices respond to sinusoidal AC residual current and to pulsating DC residual current. That second category is what electronic loads generate: variable speed drives, LED drivers, switch mode power supplies, inverters and appliance electronics. A device that only handles the AC waveform can be blinded by a pulsating DC component and miss a real fault. At 30 mA the residual sensitivity is set for personnel protection duty, and the 20 A overcurrent side handles the circuit breaker half of the job in the same body.
Built for distribution boards, not just domestic ones
Tesla builds this range for power distribution systems and for commercial and industrial installations. The terminals take rigid conductor up to 25 mm2 and the unit works with comb connection and busbar connection, so it drops into a board being built out rather than forcing loop wiring between ways. Rated endurance is 10,000 mechanical cycles and 4,000 electrical cycles, and the IP20 rating suits the enclosed board environment these are designed to sit in rather than exposed or weather affected positions.
Is the Tesla TMCBO220MA a Type A or Type AC RCBO?
It is a Type A device. The operating characteristic is Type A, so it detects pulsating DC residual current as well as sinusoidal AC residual current. Rated residual operating current is 30 mA, which is the sensitivity used for personnel protection on final subcircuits.
How much switchboard space does the Tesla TMCBO220MA take up?
It measures 36 mm across, which is two standard modules. The configuration is 1P+N with a switched neutral, so both the active and the neutral are disconnected when it trips. That is two standard ways of board space.
Can the Tesla TMCBO220MA be connected to a busbar?
Yes. Tesla rates this range for both comb connection and busbar connection, and the terminals accept rigid conductor up to 25 mm2. Rated voltage is AC 230/240 V at 50/60 Hz and breaking capacity is 6000 A.
