Why It Matters
Switched neutral, not just a switched active
A switched neutral device isolates both conductors when it operates. Working on a circuit downstream, an electrician gets true isolation from a single device rather than having to hunt for a separate neutral link. It also means a neutral fault is cleared rather than left live behind an open active. On a board reworked over time, that removes a guess from the isolation procedure.
The device takes rigid conductor up to 25 mm2 and is built to accept comb and busbar connection, so it drops into a board that is already fitted out for busbar distribution instead of forcing individual loop wiring. Mechanical life is rated at 10,000 operations and electrical life at 4,000, which covers a device that gets tested regularly rather than left untouched between inspections.
Type A is the residual characteristic modern loads call for
Type A devices respond to both sinusoidal AC residual current and pulsating DC residual current. Pulsating DC is what electronic loads generate: variable speed drives, LED drivers, switch mode power supplies, inverters and appliance electronics. A Type AC device can be blinded by a pulsating DC component and miss a genuine fault. At 30 mA, this unit gives the residual sensitivity used for personnel protection while covering the overcurrent duty in the same two modules. Specifying Type A closes a gap that widens as more connected load becomes electronic.
One device per circuit beats one RCD for the board
Where a shared residual current device protects a group of circuits, a single earth leakage fault takes every one of them out. An RCBO puts the protection on the individual final subcircuit, so a fault drops that circuit and leaves the rest of the board running. Tesla lists this range for power distribution systems and for commercial and industrial installations, and 6 kA is the breaking capacity that suits boards sitting further out from the supply rather than hard up against the transformer. Tesla quotes the figure as an Ics of 6000 A, which is the service breaking capacity rather than a one-shot rating.
Does the Tesla TMCBO216MA switch the neutral?
Yes. It is a 1P+N device with a switched neutral, so operating the toggle isolates both the active and the neutral conductor of the protected circuit.
Is this RCBO Type A or Type AC?
It is Type A. The residual operating characteristic is Type A, which means it detects pulsating DC residual current in addition to sinusoidal AC residual current. Rated residual operating current is 30 mA.
How much board space does this RCBO need?
36 mm, which is a two module footprint. It accepts rigid conductor up to 25 mm2 and is suitable for both comb and busbar connection in the board.
