Why it Matters

What a 32 A rating is for

Thirty-two amps is the heavy end of final subcircuit work. It is the rating reached for once a circuit carries a substantial fixed load rather than general outlets or lighting. Sizing the protective device to the cable and the connected load, and confirming disconnection times, is work for the designing electrician. What this RCBO provides is both protective functions in one unit at that rating.

Two protective functions in one device

An RCBO combines what would otherwise be two components. The overcurrent element interrupts sustained overloads and short circuits. The residual current element watches the imbalance between active and neutral and disconnects on earth leakage at 30 mA. Because both sit in the one device, an earth fault drops only the affected circuit rather than everything downstream of a shared RCD, which keeps fault-finding to a single circuit instead of a whole board.

Type A sensing for modern loads

Not every earth fault looks like a clean sine wave. Rectified and electronically controlled equipment can leak current that carries a DC component, and a device built only for AC residual currents may under-read it. Type A is the class that covers both waveforms, which is why it suits boards feeding drives, inverter-fed plant and switch-mode supplies rather than resistive load alone.

C curve and 6 kA in practice

Curve selection decides how much momentary overload the device rides through. The C characteristic gives enough headroom for the surge that inductive and rectified equipment pulls the instant it energises. Separately, 6 kA states the fault current the unit is rated to break. Tesla also builds a filtering stage into this RCBO to suppress false operation from transient voltages and currents. Matching the 6 kA figure to the fault level available at the board is a design decision for the installing electrician.

Can the Tesla RCDM1326A replace a separate circuit breaker and RCD?
Yes. That is what an RCBO is for. This one unit carries out the 32 A overcurrent duty and the 30 mA earth leakage duty, so a single device covers the circuit.

Will a 32 amp C curve RCBO trip on motor starting current?
It is designed not to. The C characteristic allows a short inrush before the magnetic element operates, so normal start-up surge should not cause a trip on a correctly sized circuit.
