Description
Type A earth leakage plus overcurrent, one device.
An RCBO is a residual current breaker with overcurrent protection, so it does the work of an RCD and a circuit breaker in one unit. The Tesla RCDM1166A is a single pole 16 A version, with 6kA breaking capacity, a 30mA Type A residual element, a C tripping curve and built-in transient filtering.

- Earth leakage 30mA
- Type A RCD protection class
- Single pole
- Rated voltage 240V, rated frequency 50/60Hz
- Residual current breaker with overcurrent protection
- Incorporates a filtering device against unwanted transient voltage and transient currents
- Electromechanical endurance 4000

What Type A Adds
Type A describes the RCD protection class, and it defines what the residual element is able to detect. A Type A device responds to pulsating DC residual current in addition to plain sinusoidal AC earth leakage. That distinction matters as more circuits feed chargers, drives and modern appliances, where the leakage waveform is not always a clean AC sine wave.
The earth leakage threshold is 30mA. Tesla states the device provides residual current protection together with overcurrent protection, so one unit covers both earth leakage and the duty normally handled by a separate breaker. It is not a substitute for correct installation practice or for isolating before work.
Combining both functions also means the earth leakage protection is tied to a single circuit rather than shared across a group. Where a shared device is used, one fault takes out every circuit behind it. A per-circuit RCBO limits the outage to the circuit that actually faulted, which matters most where downtime is expensive or where a board feeds several independent areas.
The Transient Filter
Nuisance tripping is the practical complaint with residual current devices. Tesla specifies that this RCBO incorporates a filtering device that prevents the risks of unwanted transient voltage and transient currents, which is aimed squarely at that problem. Switching surges and short transients are less likely to be read as a genuine earth fault.
Electromechanical endurance is rated at 4000. Compliance is stated against IEC61009, the international standard covering residual current operated circuit breakers with integral overcurrent protection, and Tesla backs the range with a 10 year warranty.
Choosing the Rating
The C curve suits general mixed loads, holding through ordinary switching inrush while still clearing sustained overloads and short circuits. At 6kA the breaking capacity covers boards with moderate prospective fault current.
Tesla publishes this Type A range from 10 A through to 40 A, so lighting, power and appliance circuits can each be given a device matched to the circuit rather than a single compromise rating across the board. Every rating in the range shares the same 6kA capacity, the same 30mA Type A residual element and the same C characteristic.
Is the Tesla RCDM1166A a Type A RCD?
Yes. Tesla lists the device as Type A RCD protection class with 30mA earth leakage. A Type A device detects pulsating DC residual current as well as sinusoidal AC residual current.
Does the RCDM1166A protect against overload as well as earth leakage?
Yes. It is an RCBO, meaning a residual current breaker with overcurrent protection, so it combines earth leakage protection with the overcurrent function of a circuit breaker.
What standard is the Tesla RCDM1166A built to?
IEC61009, the standard for residual current operated circuit breakers with integral overcurrent protection. Tesla backs the device with a 10 year warranty.
