Why it Matters

Two jobs, one module

An RCBO does the work of a residual current device and a miniature circuit breaker in one body. This unit fits that combined function into a single module at 1P+N, so a board already tight on space gains a protected final subcircuit without a rebuild. For switchboard upgrades and added circuits, that width saving is often the difference between fitting the job in and enlarging the enclosure. It also keeps each final subcircuit independently protected, so an earth leakage fault on one circuit does not take the rest of the board down with it. Tesla rates the device for household and commercial electrical distribution systems, and its protection covers fault and earth leakage, short circuit and overload in the one body.

Type A sensing and a 10 kA rating

The Type A operating characteristic is the classification defined in AS/NZS 61009.1 for devices that respond to both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. The 30 mA rated residual operating current is the level associated with protection against earth leakage, and Tesla lists complementary protection against direct human contact among the device's functions. Backing that is a 10 kA breaking capacity, giving headroom on installations where the prospective fault current sits above the more common 6 kA level. Short mains runs and large supply conductors are typical causes. The C tripping curve handles the inrush of general mixed loads without nuisance tripping while still clearing overloads promptly, and the device also guards connected equipment against insulation failure.

Fly leads and pillar terminals

Fly leads, also called pig tails, let the neutral and earth connections run straight to the bars without fighting for room behind the device. Pillar terminals accept cable up to 25 mm² and torque to 2.5 Nm, so the unit takes larger subcircuit conductors as well as standard final circuit sizes. Rated life is 10,000 mechanical cycles. The device is rated IP20 for installation inside an enclosure, is built to AS/NZS 61009.1, and carries a 10 year warranty from Tesla.

What does Type A mean on the Tesla RCBO10K20TA?
Type A is the operating characteristic classification under AS/NZS 61009.1. It covers residual current detection for both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents, at a rated residual operating current of 30 mA.

How much switchboard space does the Tesla RCBO10K20TA take up?
One module. It is a 1P+N device built to single module width, so it occupies the same space as a standard single pole circuit breaker while providing combined RCD and MCB protection.

What is the breaking capacity of the Tesla RCBO10K20TA?
10 kA. It is rated to AS/NZS 61009.1 at AC 230/240 V, 50/60 Hz, with a C tripping curve, a 20 A rated current and a 30 mA rated residual operating current.
