Why Type A Matters
Type A describes what the residual current element can detect. Alongside plain sinusoidal AC earth leakage, a Type A device also responds to pulsating DC residual current. That matters because modern loads increasingly sit behind electronic power supplies and variable speed drives, and the leakage they produce is not always a clean AC waveform.
The trip threshold is 30mA, the level associated with personal protection rather than equipment protection alone. Tesla states the device provides protection against fault and earth leakage, short circuit and overload, and describes it as complementary protection against direct contact. It is not a substitute for correct installation practice or for isolating before work.
One Module, Three Jobs
Board space is usually the constraint. Combining the RCD and the MCB into a single 1P+N module frees slots for additional circuits, or lets a smaller enclosure do the job. Fly leads are fitted for the neutral connection, and that is what makes the single module footprint possible on a device carrying both functions.
Termination is pillar type, taking cable to 25mm2, with a specified screw torque of 2.5Nm. Torque figures matter on residual current devices because a loose termination is a heat source, and Tesla publishes the number rather than leaving it to judgement. The device is IP20, so it belongs inside an enclosure or switchboard rather than an exposed position.
Rated life is 10000 mechanical cycles and 20000 electrical cycles. Tesla also lists the device as providing effective protection for electrical equipment against insulation failure, alongside its role in protecting the circuit and the people using it.
Where the 10kA Rating Fits
Breaking capacity is the prospective fault current the device can safely interrupt without damage. At 10kA this device is rated for boards where available fault current is higher than the entry level class covers. Prospective fault current is a property of the installation, not the load, so it is determined at the board rather than assumed.
Tesla supplies this fly lead range at 10, 16, 20, 25 and 32 A, all sharing the same single module footprint, the same 30mA Type A residual element and the same 10kA rating. A board can be populated across circuits with matched devices, which keeps the spares holding simple and the switchboard schedule consistent across the job.
Is the Tesla RCBO10K16TA a Type A RCD?
