Why 10 kA on a Small Three Pole Breaker

Breaking capacity is the largest fault current a device can interrupt safely. It is set by the supply, not by the load, which is why a 10 amp breaker can need the same fault rating as a much larger one on the same board. Prospective fault current is a property of where the board is, how large the service feeding it is, and how close it sits to the transformer.

That is the case for a 10 kA device at a low rated current. The rating is not about the size of the circuit below it. It is about surviving and clearing what the supply above it can deliver.

Icn Equals Ics on This Breaker

Two figures describe fault performance. Icn is the rated short-circuit capacity, the maximum the device can interrupt. Ics is the service capacity, the level it can interrupt and then continue in service afterwards. On many breakers Ics is a fraction of Icn.

Tesla states Icn equal to Ics at 10 kA on this range, so the service figure matches the headline figure. Energy Limiting Class 3 sits alongside it, describing how tightly the device caps the energy that gets through during a fault before the contacts finish opening.

Three Poles, Mounting and Isolation

All three poles are operated by one mechanism, so a fault on any phase opens all three together rather than leaving the circuit running on the remaining two. The same mechanism gives the isolation function, meaning the device is rated to be used as the disconnection point for work downstream, not only as automatic protection.

Contact position indication shows the true state of the contacts rather than the position of the toggle alone. Mounting is on DIN rail or chassis, so it suits both a standard modular board and a chassis-mounted assembly. Tesla builds the 10 kA range in one, two and three pole versions. The unit ships singly, in boxes of 4 and cartons of 40.
