What the D Characteristic Changes

The tripping curve sets how long a breaker tolerates a surge before the magnetic element operates. A D characteristic holds for longer than the B or C characteristics at the same multiple of rated current, so a load that draws a large, brief surge at switch on can come up without nuisance tripping.

That is why this variant exists alongside the standard characteristic TMCB3P40. Same 40 A rating, same three poles, same 6 kA capacity, different response to inrush. If a standard characteristic device on the circuit trips at start up but runs fine once loaded, the D variant is the direct swap.

Overload and Short Circuit Duty

Two separate mechanisms do the work. A bi-metal element handles overload, heating and bending in proportion to sustained current so a slow overload clears before the cable is damaged. The magnetic element handles short circuit, operating fast on a genuine fault, in a device rated to interrupt 6000 A.

Termination is by pillar terminal with clamp, taking rigid conductor up to 25mm2. That is the full conductor capacity Tesla publishes for the HPC2 range, and it applies at 40 A as at every other rating.

Where Tesla Positions This Range

Tesla states that the 6 kA breaking capacity of these MCBs suits commercial, domestic and industrial applications, and that the D characteristic is intended to suit most applications. That is Tesla's own positioning for the HPC2 D curve family.
