Why the D Curve Matters

A tripping curve describes how quickly a breaker responds to overcurrent. The D characteristic holds its magnetic trip point higher than the B or C characteristics, so a short, high magnitude inrush is allowed to pass without nuisance tripping. Once the surge settles, normal overload and short circuit protection continues as usual.

That behaviour is why GTS lists this unit as a motor start breaker. Tesla states the D curve characteristics suit most applications, and positions the 6 kA HPC2 range across commercial, domestic and industrial installations.

The trade-off is worth understanding. A higher magnetic threshold means a fault must reach a larger current before the instantaneous element acts, so a D curve device is specified deliberately rather than used as a general substitute.

Three Pole Switching at 415V

All three poles operate together on a common trip bar, so a fault detected on any one phase disconnects the whole circuit. For three phase equipment in an Australian switchboard, that matters: leaving a motor running on two phases risks winding damage. The 415V rating aligns with standard Australian three phase distribution.

At three modules wide the breaker occupies a predictable amount of board space, keeping switchboard layouts and future additions straightforward. Rated frequency is 50/60Hz.

Protection and Build

Protection covers both overload and short circuit conditions in the electrical distribution system. Overload tripping uses a bi-metal element that heats and bends in proportion to sustained excess current, giving a delayed response that tolerates ordinary load variation. Short circuit protection is handled by the magnetic element, which acts at the D curve threshold.

Terminals are pillar type with a clamp and accept rigid conductor up to 25mm2. The device carries an IP20 rating and is built to IEC/EN 60898 under approval number V08030. Rated mechanical life is 10,000 cycles, with an electrical life of 4,000 cycles.
