Description

D curve headroom for high inrush loads.

Circuits that draw a heavy surge at switch-on will nuisance trip a standard breaker. The Tesla TMCB3P10D is a three pole 10 amp D curve miniature circuit breaker rated at 6 kA and 415 V, three modules wide, listed by GTS as a motor start device.

  • Highest inrush tolerance of the B, C and D curves
  • 6 kA (6000 A) breaking capacity
  • 415 V rated voltage
  • Bi-metal thermal element for overload tripping
  • Overload and short-circuit protection
  • Pillar terminal with clamp
  • Rigid conductor capacity up to 25 mm²
  • Three module DIN rail width
  • 50/60 Hz rated frequency

What the D Curve Changes

Tesla builds the HPC2 series in B, C and D tripping characteristics. The D curve holds off the instantaneous magnetic trip the longest of the three, so a brief high current surge at switch-on passes without opening the breaker.

The overload side is unchanged. A bi-metal thermal element still trips on sustained overcurrent, heating and bending in proportion to the current so a small overload trips slowly and a large one trips faster. What the D curve alters is the threshold at which a momentary surge is read as a fault rather than as normal starting current.

GTS lists this unit as a motor start breaker. If the load settles to well under its rated current once running but spikes hard for a fraction of a second at start, a D curve device is the one specified.

Three Pole and the 6 kA Rating

All three poles break together on a trip or when the toggle is operated by hand, so the circuit is fully disconnected rather than left with conductors still live. The three poles share a single operating toggle.

The 6 kA breaking capacity is the largest fault current the device can interrupt safely. Tesla positions the HPC2 range at fault levels found across commercial, domestic and industrial applications. This unit is rated 415 V and takes three modules on the rail.

Terminals, Mounting and Life

The pillar terminals clamp rigid conductor up to 25 mm², landing the cable directly. The clamp bears on the conductor rather than the screw thread, which keeps contact pressure even.

The body takes three modules on standard DIN rail and carries an IP20 rating, suiting it to an enclosed board. Tesla rates the mechanism at 10,000 mechanical operations and 4,000 electrical operations, a life figure that reflects normal switching and periodic testing across the working life of a board. The unit is built to IEC/EN 60898 under approval V08030.

Q: What is the difference between the C curve and D curve version of this breaker?
A: The D curve tolerates a larger momentary inrush before the instantaneous magnetic trip operates. Overload protection is the same on both. GTS lists the D curve version as a motor start breaker.

Q: What is the breaking capacity of the Tesla TMCB3P10D?
A: It is rated at 6 kA, that is 6000 A, at 415 V. Tesla positions the HPC2 6 kA range for commercial, domestic and industrial applications.

Q: How much space does the Tesla TMCB3P10D take on a DIN rail?
A: Three modules. It is IP20 rated, accepts rigid conductor up to 25 mm² in pillar terminals with clamp, and is designed to IEC/EN 60898.
