Where the Tesla INTM Intermediate Switch Mechanism Is Used

An intermediate switch mechanism is used in multi-way lighting circuits where a single light or lighting circuit needs to be controlled from three or more switching points. In a standard two-way switching circuit, two two-way switch mechanisms allow a light to be switched from two locations — the top and bottom of a staircase, both ends of a hallway, or the two doorways into a room. When a third (or additional) switching point is required, an intermediate switch mechanism is inserted between the two two-way mechanisms in the circuit. Each additional intermediate switch adds one more point of control without changing the operation of the existing switching points.

Common applications include stairwells with landings requiring switching at multiple levels, long hallways or corridors with three or more entry points, large open-plan rooms or commercial spaces with multiple entry and exit points, and any installation where a lighting circuit must be controlled from three or more locations. The Tesla INTM installs into any Tesla Classic Series or Slimline Series grid plate gang position, and is also compatible with Clipsal grid plates — making it suitable for use in mixed installations or for replacement of existing intermediate mechanisms in Clipsal-plated installations.

Q: What is an intermediate switch and how does it differ from a two-way switch?
A: A two-way switch has 3 terminals and allows a lighting circuit to be switched from two locations. An intermediate switch has 4 terminals and is inserted between two two-way switches to add a third (or additional) switching point. You always need exactly two two-way switches at the end positions, and one intermediate switch for each additional switching point in between.

Q: How many intermediate switches can be used in a multi-way circuit?
A: As many as required — one intermediate switch mechanism is added for each additional switching point beyond the first two. A three-point switching circuit uses two two-way mechanisms and one intermediate mechanism. A four-point circuit uses two two-way mechanisms and two intermediate mechanisms, and so on.
