How the Tesla NBH Horizontal Nail Bracket Works

Nail brackets are the standard method for positioning power point and light switch mounting points in timber-framed wall construction in Australia. During the framing stage — before plasterboard is installed — the nail bracket is nailed face-on to the timber stud at the required height and position for the wall plate. The bracket holds the 84mm fixing centres in the correct orientation and at the correct setout from the stud face, so that once plasterboard is applied and the wall is finished, the wall plate can be fixed directly to the bracket at the correct depth flush with the wall surface.

The NBH is the horizontal bracket — it presents the 84mm fixing centres in the horizontal axis, matching the orientation of standard horizontal power points and switches. The NBV is the companion vertical bracket, presenting the fixing centres in the vertical axis for vertically oriented plates. Both brackets are 84mm fixing centres and the same heavy zinc galvanised steel construction.

The 70mm heavy clout nail included with each bracket is the correct nail size for fixing the bracket to a standard 90mm timber stud. The heavy zinc galvanised finish resists corrosion during construction — important in environments where the bracket is exposed to weather or moisture during the building process before the wall is enclosed.

Q: What is the difference between the NBH and NBV nail brackets?
A: The NBH (Horizontal) bracket presents the 84mm fixing centres in the horizontal axis — for standard horizontal power points and light switches. The NBV (Vertical) bracket presents the 84mm fixing centres in the vertical axis — for vertically oriented plates such as vertical GPOs and portrait-format switch plates. Both are 84mm fixing centres and the same material.

Q: When is a nail bracket used instead of a stud bracket?
A: Nail brackets (NBH, NBV) are nailed directly to the face of the timber stud — used when the stud is at the correct position for the wall plate setout. Stud brackets (SB) are fixed to the side of the stud and have an adjustable face that positions the plate fixing centres away from the stud face — used when the stud is not exactly where the wall plate needs to be, or to achieve a specific setout from the wall surface. Both result in 84mm fixing centres at the wall plate.

Q: Does the nail bracket come with the nail?
A: Yes — the NBH comes with a 70mm heavy clout nail for fixing the bracket to the timber stud.
