Ordinary PVC building cable and expanded polystyrene are a bad mix - plasticiser migrates between the two and can soften the cable sheath. Electra's SRF3025VHT is a 2.5 mm² flat twin and earth with a non-migratory sheath, so it can sit hard against polystyrene, ABS, polycarbonate and acrylic.

Why it Matters

Where non-migratory cable is not optional

Electra lists this cable for installations in wall and roofing insulation material, cold rooms, transportable buildings and caravans. That covers most of the places an Australian sparky meets expanded polystyrene: EPS sandwich panel in cool rooms, insulated roof and wall panel on transportable buildings, and the cavities of a caravan build. AS/NZS 3000 requires cables to suit the conditions of the installation, and that includes the materials they are touching. Where the run contacts polystyrene, standard TPS is the wrong cable.

Why 2.5 mm and not 1.5 mm

Two and a half millimetre is the larger of the two non-migratory sizes Electra makes in this flat TPS range, the other being 1.5 mm. Both carry the same purple non-migratory sheath and the same 450/750 V rating, so where a job runs both power and lighting through insulated panel you can keep the whole installation on non-migratory cable rather than mixing types. Size the cable for the circuit the way you normally would - the choice between 1.5 and 2.5 here is about capacity, not about the sheath.

Light industrial and festoon work

Electra rates the SRF range for light to medium industrial use and specifically for festoon systems, alongside general internal building wiring. If you are running festoon or temporary lighting where insulated panel is also in play, one cable covers both.

Can I run standard TPS cable in contact with polystyrene insulation?
No. Plasticiser in ordinary PVC cable and expanded polystyrene react with each other, which can degrade the cable sheath and the insulation panel. Use a non-migratory cable such as Electra SRF3025VHT wherever the two will be in contact.

What does non-migratory mean on electrical cable?
It means the plasticiser in the PVC compound is formulated not to migrate out of the sheath into materials it touches. On this cable Electra rates the sheath for direct contact with polystyrene, ABS, polycarbonate and acrylic.

Is this cable suitable for cold rooms and insulated panels?
