About the Tesla SUL180A Analogue Time Switch
The SUL180A is a DIN rail analogue time switch — the straightforward, reliable mechanical option for daily timed switching of lighting circuits, water pumps, irrigation systems, pool equipment, exhaust fans, and other single-phase loads where a 24-hour daily on/off program is required. The analogue dial format is familiar and easy to program — the 15-minute segment tabs around the dial face are pushed in to set ON periods and pulled out (or left in their default position) to set OFF periods, giving a clear visual indication of the programmed on/off schedule without the need for digital menus or displays.
The quartz-controlled stepper motor provides timing accuracy of ±1 second per day — far more precise than older mechanical spring-wound timers — and the 3-day power reserve battery maintains the program and clock setting for up to 3 days if the mains supply is interrupted. This prevents the timer from losing its program setting during a power outage and having to be reprogrammed when power is restored.
The three-position manual override allows the timer to be held permanently ON (for continuous operation regardless of the timer program), set to AUTO (timer program active), or held permanently OFF (circuit open regardless of the timer program). This is useful for maintenance, testing, or temporary override without losing the programmed schedule.
For inductive loads — motors, pumps, compressors, fluorescent lamp ballasts with electromagnetic control gear — the SUL180A should be used in conjunction with the Tesla TESVS125-10 contactor. Direct switching of inductive loads above the timer's inductive rating can cause premature contact wear or failure. Resistive loads (incandescent lighting, heating elements, LED drivers with resistive characteristics) can be switched directly up to 16A.
Q: What is the difference between the SUL180A and SUL181H time clocks?
A: The SUL180A is a single-pole analogue time switch (1 channel, 16A, daily program, analogue dial). The SUL181H is a 2-pole (240V with neutral) 24-hour analogue time clock with 150-hour battery back-up. Choose the SUL180A for standard single-pole DIN rail time switching; consult the SUL181H PDS for the 2-pole version specifications.
Q: Can the SUL180A be used directly on motor and pump circuits?
A: For inductive loads such as motors, pumps, and fluorescent ballasts, Tesla recommends using the SUL180A in conjunction with the TESVS125-10 contactor. The timer controls the contactor coil, and the contactor switches the inductive load — protecting the timer's contacts from the high inrush and arc loads associated with inductive switching.
Q: What does the 3-day power reserve mean?
A: The SUL180A has an internal battery that maintains the clock time and program settings for up to 3 days if the mains supply is interrupted. When mains power is restored, the timer resumes its programmed schedule from the correct time without requiring reprogramming.
