Description

Fifty amps of switched three-phase power.

Heavy plant needs a connector that will not become the weak link. The Clipsal 56C550-GY is a 50 A switched socket outlet in the sealed 56 Series enclosure, giving high-current three-phase equipment a weatherproof point of connection that can be isolated at the outlet.

Why the 50 A Rating Changes Things

Stepping up from a lighter socket is not simply a matter of a bigger number on the label. At 50 A the terminals, contacts and switch mechanism all have to carry more, and Clipsal specifies the screw terminals on this item for conductors of 10 mm² through to 16 mm². Both ends of that band are worth reading before ordering cable, because the lower figure is a specified minimum and not a suggestion.

Physically the unit occupies three modules and measures 204 mm high by 101 mm wide by 108 mm deep, so allow that footprint plus room for cable entry and for the switch to be operated when you set out the mounting position.

Sealed to IP66

An IP66 classification means two separate things: the first digit certifies the enclosure as dust tight, and the second certifies it against powerful water jets. Clipsal states conformance to AS 60529, the Australian ingress protection standard, and rates the unit across an ambient band of -25 °C to 75 °C. That range comfortably brackets what an exposed wall or a covered plant area sees anywhere in the country.

The cover is moulded ABS in Clipsal's standard grey, with phosphor bronze contact pins. Both the mercury free and PVC free flags are confirmed against this item number, and the environmental disclosure reference published for it is ENVPEP2511024EN.

Switching, Poles and Protection

An integral switch means the load can be killed before a plug moves in or out, which is the whole point of a switched outlet on a high-current circuit. When nothing is connected, a protective cover keeps the socket face clear of water and grit.

The five poles are three actives, a neutral and an earth, in the round pin arrangement used across Australia and New Zealand. Note that Clipsal records the protection type on this item as without protection, meaning there is no residual current device inside the unit.

What size cable do the Clipsal 56C550-GY terminals accept?
The screw terminals are specified for conductors between 10 mm² and 16 mm², which is the band Clipsal publishes for this 50 A item.

Can the 56C550-GY be installed outdoors or in washdown areas?
Yes. The enclosure is rated IP66 conforming to AS 60529, so it is dust tight and sealed against powerful water jets, and it operates across -25 °C to 75 °C.

Does the 56C550-GY have built-in residual current protection?
No. Clipsal records this item as without protection, so an RCD needs to sit upstream on the circuit rather than inside the socket outlet.
