Description

Tesla L5R. 5 Hole Active Link. Red Cover. 100A. 500V. Max 25mm².

The Tesla L5R is a 5 hole active link with a red tinted transparent polycarbonate cover — used in electrical switchboards to connect and distribute the active (live) conductor from the main supply to multiple outgoing circuits. The red cover identifies this as an active link in compliance with Australian electrical conventions, distinguishing it from the clear-covered neutral link (L5). The L5R is rated for cables up to 25mm² — larger than the L12R — making it suited to heavier service cable switchboard connections. Numbered terminals aid identification and wiring accuracy. Sold individually.

  • Tesla L5R — 5 Hole Active Link with Red Cover
  • Red tinted transparent polycarbonate cover
  • 5 hole terminal positions — numbered for circuit identification

What the Tesla L5R Active Link Does

An active link is a switchboard component that connects the incoming active conductor from the main supply to multiple outgoing circuit active conductors. The L5R provides 5 terminal positions with two different tunnel sizes — the 8mm tunnels suit cables up to 25mm², which is larger than the 16mm² maximum in the standard 12-hole L12R link. This makes the L5R well suited to applications where the service cable or sub-main conductors are heavier gauge, such as commercial service switchboards and industrial distribution boards where larger cross-section active conductors need to be terminated and distributed.

The red tinted polycarbonate cover provides physical protection over the live brass bar and terminal screws. The cover is transparent despite its red tint, so wiring and the sealing screw can be inspected without removing the cover. The cover is sealable with a brass insert sealing screw that resists stripping, allowing the link to be sealed after installation where required.

The 5 terminal positions are split into two tunnel sizes: three tunnels at 5.5mm diameter for cables up to 16mm², and two tunnels at 8mm diameter for cables up to 25mm². Each tunnel has two clamping screws for dual-point termination. The numbered terminals allow each connection to be clearly identified at the link — useful during commissioning and essential for fault finding and maintenance.

The Tesla L5 (clear cover, neutral link) and L5R (red cover, active link) are the companion pair for the active and neutral sides of a 5-position heavy-cable switchboard connection. For installations requiring more circuit positions, the 7-hole (L7/L7R), 12-hole (L12/L12R), and 14-hole (L14/L14R) variants are also available.

Q: What is the difference between the Tesla L5R and the L12R?
A: Both are red-covered active links with 100A, 500V ratings and brass bar construction. The key differences are hole count and maximum cable size. The L5R has 5 terminal positions with tunnels up to 8mm diameter — accepting cables up to 25mm². The L12R has 12 terminal positions with tunnels up to 6.3mm diameter — accepting cables up to 16mm². Use the L5R where heavier 25mm² active conductors need to be terminated; use the L12R for standard 10–16mm² circuit conductors in larger distribution boards.

Q: What is the difference between the Tesla L5 and the L5R?
A: The L5 has a clear (transparent) cover and is used as a neutral link. The L5R has a red tinted cover and is used as an active link. Both have the same 5 hole, 100A rated brass bar and the same tunnel sizes.

Q: Can the L5R be sealed after installation?
A: Yes — the cover has a sealing screw with a brass insert that resists stripping, allowing the cover to be sealed once installation is complete.
