Description

Tesla L12R. 12 Hole Active Link. Red Cover. 100A. 500V. Max 16mm².

The Tesla L12R is a 12 hole active link with a red tinted transparent polycarbonate cover — used in electrical switchboards to connect and distribute the active (live) conductor from the main supply to multiple outgoing circuits. The red cover identifies this as an active link in compliance with Australian electrical conventions, distinguishing it from the clear-covered neutral link (L12). Numbered terminals aid identification and wiring accuracy. Sold individually.

What the Tesla L12R Active Link Does

An active link (also called a live link or active bus link) is a switchboard component that connects the incoming active conductor from the main supply to multiple outgoing circuit active conductors. It performs the same distribution function as a neutral link but on the live side of the circuit, and is identified by a red cover under Australian wiring conventions. The L12R provides 12 terminal positions — enough to serve 12 outgoing circuits from a single link — making it well suited to medium-sized residential and light commercial switchboards.

The red tinted polycarbonate cover provides physical protection over the live brass bar and terminal screws. The cover is transparent despite its red tint, so wiring and the sealing screw can be inspected without removing the cover. The cover is sealable with a brass insert sealing screw that resists stripping, allowing the link to be sealed after installation where required by the installation standard or the inspector.

The 12 terminal positions are divided into two tunnel sizes to accommodate different cable cross-sections within the same link. Three of the tunnels are 6.3mm diameter for cables up to 16mm² — typically used for larger sub-main or high-current circuit conductors. The remaining nine tunnels are 4.5mm diameter for cables up to 10mm² — the standard size for most domestic and light commercial circuit conductors. Each tunnel has two clamping screws for a secure, dual-point termination.

The numbered terminals allow each circuit to be clearly identified at the link — useful during initial wiring and essential for ongoing fault finding, circuit testing, and switchboard maintenance. The Tesla L12 (clear cover, neutral link) and L12R (red cover, active link) are the companion pair for the active and neutral sides of a 12-circuit switchboard distribution.

Q: What is the difference between the Tesla L12 and the L12R?
A: The L12 has a clear (transparent) cover and is used as a neutral link — connecting the neutral conductor from the main supply to the neutral conductors of outgoing circuits. The L12R has a red tinted cover and is used as an active link — connecting the live conductor on the active side. Both have the same 12 hole, 100A rated brass bar and the same tunnel sizes; the cover colour is the distinguishing identifier per Australian wiring conventions.

Q: Can the L12R be sealed after installation?
A: Yes — the cover has a sealing screw with a brass insert that resists stripping, allowing the cover to be sealed once installation is complete. The transparent red cover allows wiring and the sealing screw to be located and inspected without removing the cover.

Q: What cable sizes does the L12R accommodate?
A: The L12R has two tunnel sizes. Three tunnels are 6.3mm diameter, each accommodating one cable up to 16mm². Nine tunnels are 4.5mm diameter, each accommodating one cable up to 10mm². Each tunnel has two clamping screws.
