Why Icn Equals Ics Matters

Two breaking capacity figures are published for a miniature circuit breaker. Icn is the ultimate capacity, the largest fault the device can interrupt at all. Ics is the service capacity, the largest fault it can interrupt and then remain in full service afterwards.

On many breakers Ics is only a fraction of Icn, so a severe fault clears safely but the device should then be replaced. On the MCB10K3P63 the two figures are equal at 10 kA. After a full rated fault the breaker remains a serviceable device rather than a consumable one.

Energy Limiting Class 3 is the highest of the three classes defined for this measure. It describes how much let-through energy reaches downstream conductors and equipment before the contacts part.

Three Pole Switching and Isolation

All three poles trip together, so a fault on any one phase disconnects the whole circuit. That behaviour matters on three phase equipment in Australian switchboards, where leaving a load energised on the remaining phases risks damage.
