Why Icn Equals Ics Matters

Two breaking capacity figures are published for a miniature circuit breaker, and they are not the same thing. Icn is the ultimate capacity, the largest fault current the device can interrupt at all. Ics is the service capacity, the largest fault it can interrupt and then remain in service afterwards.

On many breakers Ics is only a fraction of Icn. A severe fault is cleared safely, but the device has reached the end of its useful life in the process and should be swapped out. On the MCB10K3P32 the two figures are equal at 10 kA, so the full rated capacity is also the figure the breaker can take and keep operating at.

Tesla also specifies Energy Limiting Class 3 for this range, the top of the three energy limiting classes. The measure describes how much let-through energy reaches downstream conductors and equipment in the time it takes the contacts to part. A lower let-through figure means less thermal and electromagnetic stress carried into the circuit beyond the breaker.
