Description

Three poles of full 10 kA protection in one device.

The Tesla MCB10K3P20 is a three pole miniature circuit breaker rated 20 A with a full 10 kA breaking capacity. It handles overload protection, short circuit protection and the isolation function in one DIN rail or chassis mounted device, so a single part covers all three duties.

Key Features

  • Rated current: 20 A
  • Three poles
  • Breaking capacity: 10 kA
  • Icn = Ics = 10 kA, so the full rated capacity is also the service capacity
  • Energy Limiting Class 3
  • C curve tripping characteristic
  • Protection against overload and short circuit
  • Function of isolation
  • Contact position indication
  • DIN rail and chassis mount
  • Tesla part number MCB10K3P20
  • Supplied individually, boxed in 4, carton of 40

Why the 10 kA Rating Matters

Breaking capacity is the largest fault current a breaker can interrupt and still be relied on afterwards. Many miniature circuit breakers are rated at 6 kA, which is adequate where the available fault current is low. Closer to the supply transformer, prospective fault current climbs, and a 10 kA device gives you the headroom to cover it without stepping up to a physically larger and dearer class of protection.

What sets this range apart is that Icn equals Ics. On many breakers the service short circuit capacity is derated below the rated capacity, meaning the device may clear a fault at its headline figure but is not warranted to keep operating normally afterwards. Here both figures are the same 10 kA, so the breaker is rated to clear a full capacity fault and stay in service.

Energy Limiting Class 3 and the C Curve

Energy Limiting Class 3 is the highest of the three classes defined for miniature circuit breakers. It describes how much let-through energy passes to the circuit during a short circuit before the contacts part. A Class 3 device cuts that energy hard, which reduces the thermal and magnetic stress carried by the cable and the downstream equipment during the fault.

The C curve is the general purpose tripping characteristic. It rides through the brief inrush that many loads draw at switch on, while still tripping quickly on a genuine short circuit. That balance is why C is the default choice across most general circuits, and why it is the curve supplied across the whole Tesla 10 kA range.

Mounting and Everyday Use

The MCB10K3P20 mounts on standard DIN rail or directly by chassis mount, so it suits both modular assemblies and fixed panel work. Contact position indication shows at a glance whether the contacts are open or closed, which is a practical help during fault finding and before any isolation is relied upon.

The isolation function means this device is rated to provide isolation as well as protection, so it does double duty in the circuit rather than needing a separate isolating device alongside it.

Q: What is the breaking capacity of the Tesla MCB10K3P20?
A: It is rated at 10 kA. Icn and Ics are both 10 kA, so the rated short circuit capacity and the service short circuit capacity are the same figure.

Q: Does the Tesla MCB10K3P20 mount on DIN rail?
A: Yes. The Tesla 10 kA MCB range is rated for both DIN rail mounting and chassis mounting, so it fits either method without extra hardware.

Q: What tripping curve does the MCB10K3P20 use?
A: It is a C curve device. C is the general purpose characteristic, tolerating normal inrush current at switch on while still tripping quickly on a short circuit.
