Description

Shut down earth faults before anyone gets hurt.

The Tesla RCD2P40A is a 2 pole, 40 amp residual current device with 30mA Type A sensing. It disconnects both the active and the neutral the moment leakage to earth is detected, guarding people against electric shock on every circuit sitting downstream of it.

Earth Leakage Only, So Plan the Board Around It

An RCD watches for current escaping to earth and cuts supply when that leakage exceeds the rated sensitivity. That is all it does. The RCD2P40A carries no overload or short-circuit element of its own, so every circuit it feeds still needs a circuit breaker sized to that load. The usual arrangement is one RCD covering a bank of final subcircuits, with an MCB per circuit sitting behind it.

At 40 A across two poles, this unit has the headroom to sit ahead of a group of circuits rather than a single load. Both conductors are broken on trip, not just the active, so the protected section is fully opened rather than left with a live neutral. The 250 V rating and 6 kA short-circuit capacity set the envelope it can be applied within, and the device is 6 kV rated for impulse withstand.

What 30 mA Type A Actually Buys You

Sensitivity is 30 mA, the threshold used where the concern is a person rather than the wiring. The Type A classification is the part worth understanding: a Type A device responds to sinusoidal AC residual currents and to pulsating DC residual currents, where an older Type AC device only handles the sinusoidal case. Electronic loads increasingly produce the pulsating kind.

Two Modules and a Terminal Design That Behaves

The body occupies 2 module positions and measures 81 x 36 x 75 mm, so board space is easy to plan before you open the packet. Terminations are the no hot spot type with every cable strand locked in, which keeps the whole conductor clamped. The terminals also guide themselves into the correct position behind a guard, taking the guesswork out of a fit-off in a crowded board. Closure is fast, and the rated operating range runs from -5 to 40 deg C.

Does the Tesla RCD2P40A protect against overload or short circuit?
No. It is a residual current device only. It provides earth leakage protection at 30 mA and must be paired with separate circuit breakers on the circuits it feeds for overload and short-circuit protection. Its own 6 kA figure is a short-circuit withstand capacity, not an overcurrent tripping function.

What sensitivity does the Tesla RCD2P40A trip at?
30 mA, using Type A sensing. Type A responds to both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents, so it covers a wider range of fault waveforms than a Type AC device.

How much switchboard space does the Tesla RCD2P40A take up?
Two modules. The body measures 81 x 36 x 75 mm, is rated at 250 V with a 6 kA short-circuit capacity, and is rated for operation from -5 to 40 deg C.
