Why 10 kA Matters

Breaking capacity is the largest fault current a breaker can interrupt safely. The closer a board sits to the supply transformer, and the larger the service feeding it, the higher the prospective fault current at that point. Where a 6 kA device is marginal, a 10 kA device restores the margin.
