About Bootlace Ferrules — Why Use Them
A bootlace ferrule (also called a pin ferrule or end sleeve) is crimped onto the end of a stranded conductor before insertion into a screw terminal block. Without a ferrule, the individual strands of a stranded conductor can splay, break off, or work loose from a screw terminal over time — reducing contact reliability and creating the risk of stray strands causing short circuits or poor connections. The crimped ferrule consolidates all conductor strands into a single rigid pin that inserts cleanly and securely into the terminal, and stays secure under vibration and repeated terminal cycling.
The insulated collar serves two purposes — it protects the conductor strands at the point of entry into the ferrule barrel, and it provides a colour-coded wire size identification that allows the ferrule size to be confirmed visually without removing the conductor from the terminal. White is the standard collar colour for 0.50mm² ferrules within the DIN 46228 colour coding system used across European and Australian control and instrumentation wiring practice.
Bootlace ferrules are applied using a standard ratchet ferrule crimping tool — the ferrule is placed over the stripped conductor end, inserted into the correct die on the crimping tool, and compressed with a single stroke. The ratchet mechanism ensures a complete crimp on every cycle.
Q: What wire size does the BL050 suit?
A: The BL050 suits 0.50mm² stranded conductors — fine control wire used in automation, instrumentation, and switchboard wiring.
Q: What is the difference between BL034L and BL050?
A: Both are 8mm insulated bootlace ferrules. The BL034L suits 0.34mm² conductors (pink collar); the BL050 suits 0.50mm² conductors (white collar). Select the ferrule that matches the cross-section of the conductor being terminated.
Q: What tool is required to crimp the BL050?
A: A standard bootlace ferrule ratchet crimping tool is required. The tool must have a die set that accommodates 0.50mm² ferrules.
Q: How many ferrules are in a pack?
A: The BL050 is sold in a pack of 500 ferrules.
